‘Baby whisperer’ St. Clair County deputy delivers baby on the job for second time in 5 years

First responders never know what each day, or shift, will bring and in St. Clair County on Thursday it was a new baby boy.

The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a 19-year-old woman in active labor at a Vincent residence.

Deputy Caleb Wise was the first on the scene, and quickly realized the baby was crowning and would be coming soon.

Dispatcher Tina Davis immediately active Prepared Live, an app that provides video, picture, GPS location, and text messaging.

The app allows the dispatcher to send a link to the 911 call and through that link video can enabled, allowing them to actually see the scene.

The same app was recently used by St. Clair deputies to save a choking baby.

Wise successfully delivered Ryan Howell at 9:54 a.m. The baby, who was due on March 15, weighed 7 pounds and was 19 inches long.

“I caught him, and then the first medic arrived,’’ Wise said.

Ryan is actually the second baby delivered by Wise while he was on duty, and he’s quickly getting dubbed by coworkers as the “baby whisperer.”

He delivered another baby on Christmas Eve in 2017 when he worked for the Steele Police Department.

With that previous experience, he must not have been panicking when tasked with Thursday’s delivery, right? “Oh, I was,’’ Wise said.

Sheriff’s officials reported Ryan and his mom, Jaycee Howell, have been checked out at a local hospital and are doing well.

“It was a nice to be a part of,’’ Wise said, “and to be able to help someone and get a win out of it. It all worked out well.”
