Alabama schools delay opening Friday, March 3 due to severe weather

Alabama schools are looking at plans for Friday ahead of expected early morning storms.

All of the state is at risk of seeing strong storms, with the northern two-thirds of Alabama having the better probability of severe weather. Strong to severe storms are expected to approach Alabama from the west early Friday morning — as early as 4 a.m. — and track eastward through the day.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is cautioning drivers to be aware of flooding in low-lying areas as the National Weather Service in Huntsville says to expect “multiple rounds” of showers and storms through Friday.

Flood warnings are in place through mid-morning for much of north Alabama as the upper part of the state could see as much as 5 inches of rain over 24 hours.

Jim Stefkovich, a meteorologist with the Alabama Emergency Management Agency, said between 1-3 inches of rain fell overnight with an additional 1-2 inches expected through this afternoon. Some of today’s storms could produce damaging wind gusts, he said.

A flood watch will continue for the northern part of the state through Friday at 6 p.m. The majority of the state will be under a wind advisory from midnight to 9 p.m. Friday.
