North Alabama flash floods: Drivers warned to use caution with more rain on the way

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is cautioning drivers to be aware of flooding in low-lying areas as the National Weather Service in Huntsville says to expect “multiple rounds” of showers and storms through Friday.

“We are experiencing flooding on some roadways throughout Madison County this morning,” the Sheriff’s Office stated.

“With more rain expected over the next 24 hours, we are asking that if you are traveling the roads, use extreme caution.”

Authorities say drivers should not attempt to travel through a flooded road, or around a barricade, as the depth of water is not always evidence. Just two feet of water can sweep a vehicle away.

Stick to designated routes, and be especially cautious at night, as it is harder to recognize flood dangers.

The greatest concern for flash flooding is tonight, the service said. A flood watch has been issued for all of the Tennessee Valley through 6 p.m. Friday.

In total, one to three inches is expected, with locally higher amounts of up to four inches possible.

The Tennessee Valley is also under a wind advisory for midnight Friday through 9 p.m.
