Mobile sets all-time temperature record for February

The last day of meteorological winter felt more like summer for the Mobile area.

The National Weather Service in Mobile said the metro area hit 85 degrees on Tuesday, the last day of February and the last day of meteorological winter. (Meteorological spring begins today and lasts until May 31.)

Not only was Mobile’s 85-degree temperature a record for Feb. 28, it also was the hottest temperature on record for the month of February for the city, according to the weather service.

However, the all-time February record hadn’t even had a chance to collect dust — it was just tied on Sunday when Mobile had a high of 82 degrees. Before Sunday the record had stood unchallenged since 1962.

Mobile wasn’t the only city to add to record books on Tuesday. The National Weather Service in Birmingham reported that Montgomery also had a record high for Feb. 28, reaching 84 degrees. The previous record was 83 degrees, which was last reached all the way back in 1948.

The weather service in Mobile said more record highs will be possible over the next day or two as warm, moist air reigns over the state.

Highs on Wednesday are expected to reach the 70s and 80s statewide. Thursday could have more of the same.

Wednesday’s forecast highs are at the top of this post. Below are the forecast highs for Thursday:

Highs on Thursday will continue to be in the 80s for south Alabama. North and north-central Alabama will be in the 70s.

A cold front is expected to move through on Friday and will bring the possibility of severe weather.

Cooler weather is expected on Saturday.

Temperatures are expected to be on the rise again at the start of next week.
