Pack of dogs fatally mauled 65-year-old man found on Jefferson County roadside, coroner says

A man found dead on a west Jefferson County roadside was fatally mauled by a pack of dogs, authorities said.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim Wednesday as Joe Cleveland Scott. He was 65 and lived in the McDonalds Chapel community where the attack happened.

The discovery was made just before 7 a.m. Tuesday by a passerby, said Lt. Joni Money. The location was Iceland Avenue and Utica Place.

Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene and discovered the man unresponsive. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 7:08 a.m.

Money said there were six large dogs around Scott when they arrived. The attack is believed to have happened at 6:49 a.m.

Animal control had to be called to trap the dogs before investigators could begin their probe. The trapping took more than an hour.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Jefferson County Animal Control are investigating.

“It is usual for somebody to be attacked,’’ Money said. “My understanding from these neighbors is these dogs have been in the area for a while and have not been aggressive.”

The dogs have been euthanized.
