11 Birmingham middle schoolers ill, possibly due to edibles

An investigation is underway after nearly a dozen students fell ill at a Birmingham middle school Tuesday morning.

Birmingham police and fire medics were dispatched about 12:15 p.m. to Jones Valley Middle School at 2000 31st Street S.W.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Capt. Orlando Reynolds said they were dispatched on a report that 11 students started complaining of general sickness after eating an undisclosed type of candy.

Early reports indicate that candy was some type of edible gummies.

Reynolds said BFRS transported a 13-year-old girl to Children’s of Alabama. She was alert and conscious.

The other students who reported feeling ill were taken to the doctor or the hospital by family members.

Birmingham City Schools said the investigation is in its early stages.
