Jalen Hurts getting new offensive coordinator

The Philadelphia Eagles are promoting quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson to offensive coordinator, ESPN and the Philadelphia Inquirer reported on Tuesday.

Shane Steichen served as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator for the previous two seasons, but he left after Philadelphia’s 38-35 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII on Feb. 12 to become the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts.

The father of Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts coached Johnson in high school, and while Mississippi State’s quarterbacks coach, Johnson tried to get Hurts to play for the Bulldogs. Coming out of Channelview High School in Texas, the quarterback picked Alabama instead.

“He’s going to be a star one day,” Hurts said about Johnson during a press conference preceding Super Bowl LVII. “He’s going to be a big-time head coach one day, I have no doubt in my mind. That’s coming from a personal friendship with him and I. Also being able to play for him. …

“He has a great track record. Hopefully, we can keep him here as long as we possibly can, but nonetheless I’m proud of him, and it’s definitely just the beginning for the both of us.”

Johnson has worked as Philadelphia’s quarterbacks coach for the past two seasons, joining coach Nick Sirianni’s staff from Florida, where he was the Gators’ offensive coordinator.

Although Sirianni came to Philadelphia two years ago as offensive coordinator of the Colts, he had Steichen call the plays for the Eagles’ offense.

In his second season as Philadelphia’s starting quarterback, Hurts finished second in the voting for The Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player Award. In Super Bowl LVII, Hurts became the only player in NFL history to have at least 300 passing yards, one touchdown pass, 70 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns in the same game.

Hurts said Johnson had helped him succeed as an NFL quarterback.

“Football is the same,” Hurts said. “It’s about how you communicate certain things to people, and I feel like he’s a great communicator. I think he’s been definitely able to simplify some things, if you will, and I think it holds a lot of weight that he’s played the position. He’s the best quarterback to come through Utah, so I think that holds a lot of weight. I think his experience with the game, I think what he’s learned throughout his years as well, all of that goes into play.”
