What’s the mysterious dust? Residents in several states report powdery substance

Residents of several mid-Atlantic states have reported an unusual amount of dust falling from the sky and coating cars and other surfaces in recent days.

CBS News reported the powdery substance has been found in Maryland, northern Virginia and West Virginia. The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection is investigating the matter and, as of late Monday, said preliminary tests show the substance is “predominantly pollen, with trace amounts of mineral matter.”

There was no explanation on what “mineral matter” was involved.

The agency began investigating the reports after seeing the substance across multiple West Virginia counties late Thursday night.

The is not believed to be tied to the recent toxic train derailment in Ohio but some do believe it could be linked to debris from recent dust storms in the Midwest.

Accuweather Bill Deger told Panhandlenewsnetwork.com he believes the dust has blown to the Atlantic from other parts of the country.

“I pulled up some satellite pictures and data…and it looks like this is dust that originated from parts of the southern plains.  You have to go back to New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma to find the origins of what looks like some dust that was carried by high altitude winds across the country,” Deger said.

No shelter in place advisories have been issued and it does not seem to be impacting air quality, officials said.
