Brandon Miller, after scoring 65 points, not named SEC freshman of the week
The SEC on Monday named Arkansas guard Nick Smith, Jr. as its freshman of the week after the nation’s top recruit scored 26 points against Georgia and 24 against Alabama on Saturday.
The selection is notable because Alabama freshman Brandon Miller scored a season-high 41 points in last Wednesday’s win and another 24 against Arkansas for a total of 65 points.
But Miller was the subject of national controversy last week when his name was revealed during a Tuesday court hearing. Law enforcement testimony stated Miller had contact with Darius Miles, who asked him to bring Miles’ gun to the scene of what became a murder on Tuscaloosa’s strip during the early-morning hours of Jan. 15. Miller was not charged and is considered a witness, and not a subject, by police.
Neither Alabama nor the SEC has disciplined Miller, and the SEC has not issued any comment about Miller.
Miller has been named the SEC’s freshman of the week six times this season, most recently Feb. 13. That tied a program record set by James “Hollywood” Robinson in 1991.
Kentucky’s Oscar Tshiebwe was named Monday as the SEC’s overall player of the week.
