Alabama retains No. 2 ranking before Auburn comes to Tuscaloosa

Alabama retained its No. 2 ranking in Monday’s Associated Press basketball poll before it hosts Auburn on Wednesday evening in Coleman Coliseum.

The Tide can clinch the outright SEC regular-season title and No. 1 seed in the SEC tournament if it wins the 6 p.m. CT tip off in Tuscaloosa, or if Texas A&M loses Tuesday night at Ole Miss.

Alabama has already clinched a share of the SEC regular-season title. An outright title would be the program’s second in the past three seasons after it had none since 2002.

Alabama remained behind top-ranked Houston for a consecutive week in the AP poll after beating South Carolina in overtime and holding off Arkansas last week. The Cougars won both of their American Conference games to stay No. 1.

The AP poll matches the NET rankings, which rank Houston as the nation’s best team and Alabama second. But Alabama remains ESPN’s projected No. 1 overall seed for the NCAA tournament.

The coaches poll will be released later Monday. Alabama was No. 2 last week.

Auburn has lost seven of its past 10 games and remained unranked Monday in the AP poll. The Tigers were also unranked when they lost Feb. 11 in Neville Arena to then-No. 3 Alabama.

Auburn has a 2-30 all-time record against teams ranked Nos. 1 or 2 in the AP poll. Its lone wins came in 1988 against then-No. 1 Kentucky, and in 1984 against then-No. 2 Kentucky. The Tigers lost earlier this month to then-No. 2 Tennessee.
