Fleeing drug overdose suspect charged with assault after hitting Bessemer officer with vehicle

A Hoover man has been formally charged after authorities say he struck a Bessemer police officer with his vehicle early Saturday.

The officer was dispatched at 3:55 a.m. Saturday to the 3000 block of Ninth Avenue North to an investigate an overdose. The person was still behind the wheel of a car and responsive enough to drive off, said Lt. Christian Clemons.

In the process, the officer was struck. He sustained a broken foot.

The suspect was located at home in Hoover where he fled again, Clemons said. Bessemer and Hoover police took him into custody.

Michael Sean Giera, 36, is charged with first-degree assault, attempting to elude and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was transferred from the Bessemer City Jail to the Jefferson County Jail at 7:35 p.m. Sunday and remains held on bonds totaling $101,000.
