STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Those planning to hitch a ride from LaGuardia Airport on Sunday, Feb. 26 via ride-sharing apps will need to have Plan B in mind.

Drivers for Uber and Lyft are planning to strike outside the Queens airport from 12 p.m. Sunday to 12 a.m. Monday, according to the New York Taxis Workers Alliance (NYTWA). Drivers are asked to deny the pick-up requests of passengers.

The strike comes months after a judge ruled against a planned pay hike by New York City, who said faulty methods were used to calculate the scheduled increase for drivers, according to ABC7.

“Uber made $8.6 Billion from Oct 1st to Dec 31st, 2022 but sued to stop our raise in NYC!,” a flyer tweeted out by NYTWA reads. “Uber and Lyft are charging riders 50% more and still taking more commission from us. Meanwhile, Uber & Lyft continue to deactivate drivers with no notice, reason, or appeal.

“Strike to demand Uber & Lyft pay us more and stop deactivations & no log-offs,” the statement continues. “When we strike, we the drivers have the power. Win back our full raise, higher pay, stop deactivations & more!”

Among the demands listed on the NYTWA flyer are premium rates for premium cars, doubling of rates on out-of-town trips, and paying drivers either 85% of the fare or 100% TLC rates on each trip, whichever is higher.

The union representing the drivers also announced it is planning for a rally and strike pickets outside terminals.
