Mobile to move facilities after discovery of 3,000 graves

On Wednesday, the city of Mobile announced that it was in the process of relocating five city facilities that are on the site of roughly 3,000 unmarked graves.

“These are all unmarked graves,” Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson said Wednesday. “If it wasn’t for ground-penetrating radar, you wouldn’t know it, unless you were to dig.”

The city’s police training facility, fire training facility, animal shelter, a facilities maintenance building and the Mobile Police Department Mounted Unit are all set to be relocated away from the site, which is at the intersection of Virginia and Ann streets. The MPD Impound Yard, which is also on the property, is being evaluated by the city, according to a release sent out by the city. Stimpson said the process to relocate the buildings will take several years.

Whose remains are buried at the site is unclear, as most of the graves were unmarked. Stimpson said he “didn’t want to speculate” about who could be buried there. The city has no plans to identify the remains, he says.

In a 1999 report on the graves, E. Fletcher Thompson, a consultant hired by the city, said that the site was likely a “potter’s field,” or free burying ground for people who were unknown or impoverished.
