NE Regional boys: Oakwood explodes past Skyline for final four berth

Oakwood Adventist Academy capitalized on untimely miscues by Skyline in the pivotal fourth quarter to earn its way to its first visit to the AHSAA Class 1A state tournament final four, beating the Vikings 58-50 on Wednesday at Jacksonville State University’s Pete Mathews Coliseum.

The third-ranked Mustangs trailed 46-35 headed into the final quarter after Skyline had overwhelmed Oakwood 20-8 in the third period to come from a point behind (27-26) at the half. Oakwood scored nine points off seven turnovers and outscored the Vikings 8-2 in the paint in the final quarter. Eighth-ranked Skyline had no answer for the onslaught as Oakwood won the quarter 23-4 and with it the Northeast Regional title.

Skyline was 0-2 in the regular season against the Huntsville private church school, an Area 13 foe.

Oakwood shot 45.5 percent from the floor and made 6-of-16 (37.5 percent) of its 3-point attempts. The Mustangs had 39 rebounds – 12 on the offensive glass – while holding Skyline to 16 boards. The winners overcame committing 21 turnovers, allowing 16 points, while the Vikings gave up 15 points off 14 turnovers.

Region MVP Jonathan Walden scored 25 to lead Oakwood. The 5-foot-9 senior guard was near-perfect shooting the ball, hitting 9-of-11 shots from the floor and 6-of-7 – all in the fourth quarter – from the foul line. Walden scored 12 of his 25 in the final period after being held to two points in the second period and four in the third. He also had four steals and four assists.

Camden Edmonds, who scored 10 points, and Jayden Nesbitt, who claimed 11 rebounds to go with his four points, also made the all-tournament team for Oakwood (26-8). Tysean Allen grabbed nine rebounds and Eleazar Williams scored nine points and had six rebounds in the win.

Skyline (24-10) got 15 points from all-tourney pick Will Avans. Avans also had two assists, a block and a steal. Bryant Kennamer scored 13 points and made four steals on his way to the all-tournament team. Jayten Prince also made all-tournament after scoring nine points with six rebounds in the region final.

Thomas Curlee of Faith Christian rounded out the all-tournament team.

Oakwood will play the winner of Thursday’s Autaugaville-Loachapoka game in the state semifinals at Birmingham’s Legacy Arena on Monday at 1:30 p.m.
