South Regional girls: McGill-Toolen downs Theodore in 6A

The McGill-Toolen girls didn’t want to take an extended break from the final four.

Lindsey Cox scored the first two baskets of overtime — in fact, the only two baskets of overtime — Wednesday morning in the Class 6A South Regional final and the fourth-ranked Yellow Jackets outlasted rival Theodore 38-34 to punch their ticket to Birmingham next week.

It’s eighth time in nine seasons under coach Carla Berry that McGill has reached the final four. The Yellow Jackets had a streak of seven straight appearances ended a year ago when they lost in the regional semifinals to Helena.

Cox scored on layups at the 2:50 and 54-second mark in overtime to give McGill a 37-33 lead. A Jazmyn Bigham free throw made it 37-34 with 41 seconds left, but Theodore (23-10) could get no closer. Emily Claire Harbaugh closed the scoring with a free throw for McGill.

The Bobcats had two chances to win the game in overtime. Trailing 33-32, Bigham tied the game with a free throw after a technical foul on the McGill bench. She missed the second free throw, but Theodore had another chance after Cox missed a jumper. However, Dayzah Weatherly’s layup attempt in the waning seconds was no good.

Star of the game: Cox didn’t have a terrific shooting day (6-of-17 from the field), but her two baskets in overtime turned the tables for McGill. She finished with 13 points and six steals.

Stat game: McGill – MVP Anna Reed McNeece was the only other McGill scorer in double figures with 12 points. She also chipped in four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Theodore – Bigham led the way with 18 points and eight rebounds. Parklyn Floyd had 13 points.

By the numbers: McGill shot 45.9 percent from the field (17-of-37), 2-of-9 from 3-point range (22 percent) and 2-of-6 from the free throw line. Theodore was 12-of-23 from the field (52 percent), 0-for-3 from 3-point range and 10-of-13 from the foul line (76.9 percent). The Bobcats won the rebounding battle 19-14 but committed 24 turnovers.

Next up: McGill-Toolen (29-5) will play five-time defending state champion Hazel Green at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the state semifinals at Legacy Arena. The Trojans advanced Wednesday with a 55-45 win over Clay-Chalkville in the Northwest Regional final.
