The party after Mardi Gras: Toto hits Mobile Saenger Theatre Saturday

Playing a show in Mobile right after the revelries of Mardi Gras have given way to the somber sobriety of Ash Wednesday might be a daunting challenge for some bands. Joseph Williams thinks Toto is up to it.

And he’s got plenty of reason to feel that way, as the group heads toward Mobile for a show on Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Mobile Saenger Theatre. After all, this isn’t just a Grammy-winning group that kicked out an impressive string of hits from 1978′s “Hold the Line” to 1988′s “Pamela.” It’s one that hit the pop-culture lottery in 2018 when the band Weezer covered Toto’s “Africa” only to have it go all the way to No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart. It might have been an ironic tribute, but it reintroduced a lot of new listeners to the song’s (and the band’s) un-ironic charms.

Williams, now on his third stint as Toto vocalist, has been with the group off and on since 1986. He sings alongside guitarist Steve Lukather, who was among the group’s founders. As for the rest of the band, tour promotional materials bill it as the fifteenth incarnation of the group, featuring veteran performers whose credits include work with Huey Lewis and the News, Snoop Dogg, Prince and Ringo Star, among other artists of note.

Williams said he’s confident the band has what it takes to get people over the post-Mardi Gras blues.

“It’s a little more rock than maybe it has been in the past,” he said. “We’re going into our second year with newer members … We did a tour last year with Journey with this same cast of characters. You’ll be able to enjoy that. We have some amazingly talented musicians, which is a prerequisite for being in the band.”
