A.J. Brown: ‘Give Jalen the house, building, state’

Wide receiver A.J. Brown’s desire for a mega-contract got him traded from the Tennessee Titans to the Philadelphia Eagles during the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He came out of that with a four-year, $100 million deal and an appearance in Super Bowl LVII.

This offseason, Brown is talking about big money again — not for himself, but for Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts.

“You got to pay, bro,” Brown said during a Tuesday appearance on the “Raw Room” podcast. “Listen, I love Philly. What I’m about to say: You do not pay this man, just ship me off wherever he’s fixing to go. So you talk about pressure: (Eagles general manager) Howie (Roseman), get it done. …

“They got to give Jalen the house, the building, the state, everything.”

The sports-financial website spotrac.com estimates Hurts’ value on an open market would be a six-year, $265.373 million contract.

Hurts’ four-year, $6.025 million rookie contract still has a season remaining, but Roseman said during his end-of-season press conference that signing Hurts to an extension would be a “priority” for the Eagles.

Hurts finished second in the voting for The Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player Award, made second-team All-Pro and was chosen for the Pro Bowl for the 2022 season as he helped Philadelphia set a team record for victories and win the NFC championship before the Eagles fell to the Kansas City Chiefs 38-35 in Super Bowl LVII on Feb. 12.

Even in defeat, Hurts had a rare performance with 304 passing yards, a touchdown pass, 70 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. No other player in NFL history has reached those four stats in the same game.

Brown said he plans to play with Hurts and the quarterback’s former Alabama teammate DeVonta Smith as long as he can.

In 2022, Brown had 88 receptions for 1,496 yards and 11 touchdowns and Smith had 95 receptions for 1,196 yards and seven touchdowns in his second NFL season. Brown set a franchise single-season record for receiving yards as the Eagles had two 1,000-yard receivers in the same campaign for the first time in team history.

“I’m definitely going to try to do everything in my power to play as long with Jalen as I can — him and DeVonta,” Brown said. “Me and DeVonta, we’re a great tandem. I’m definitely going to try to keep that going as long as I can. He’s up and rising, another level. At some point, he’s going to be up. We’re definitely going to try to keep the team together, man, and try to win while we’re together.”

The “Raw Room” podcast is hosted by former NFL players Jalen Collins and Daren Bates, who is a former Auburn standout.
