UMS-Wright swept a Saturday double-header over Thomasville, with big offensive outbursts accounting for 13-1 and 15-5 wins.

In Game 1, the Bulldogs scored in every inning – including five runs in the fifth – with Sutton Snypes earning the win on the mound. Snypes threw five innings, allowing two hits and one run with seven strikeouts and two walks. Olin Ward went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer and four RBIs. Wilson Colvin went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

UMS-Wright scored 10 runs in the top of the first in Game 2. Alex Sherman went four innings, allowing six hits with four strikeouts and a pair of walks for the Bulldogs. Ward went 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Cole Blaylock had a three-run home run as he went 3-for-4 at the plate. Will Taylor and Logan Norris had two hits apiece.

BASEBALL

Hueytown 6, Hoover 3: The Gophers broke a 3-3 tie with what proved to be the game-winning run in the fifth inning and added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth to earn the victory on Friday. Hueytown scored three runs in the first inning with Hoover knotting the score with three in the third off a passed ball.

Hueytown senior John Pickens struck out six Hoover batters and allowed three runs on one hit. Aaron Wallace threw three innings in relief.

Andrew Pitts took the loss for Hoover, allowing one run on two hits in 1.3 innings in relief.

Devin Lee was 1-for-3 at the plate for Hoover.

Daniel Watkins went 2-for-3 for Hueytown.

Montgomery Academy 11, Tallassee 9: Will Hardin smashed a walk-off two-run home run to open the Eagles’ 2023 season.

Rick McBridge went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored for MA. Parker Cook was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Walton Norrell went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Oscar Fiore pitched 3.1 innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits. He struck out five. Will Hardin gave up one run on four hits and Beau Smith allowed three hits and struck out three for Montgomery Academy.

Bob Jones 5, Hoover 3: The Patriots scored a pair of runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and two more in the seventh to earn the win over Hoover on Saturday.

Ben Arn threw five innings, allowing four hits and one run for Bob Jones. Arn struck out six and walked one. Nate Mayfield pitched two innings in relief.

Right-hander Jackson Graber took the loss for Hoover, allowing three runs on one hit in one inning of relief. Starter Will Adams struck out seven and allowed one hit for the Bucs.

Devin Lee went 2-for-3 to lead Hoover at the plate.

Oxford 5, Hoover 3: Oxford scored all of its runs in the third inning to beat the Bucs on Saturday. Peyton Watts earned the win on the mound, allowing two runs on five hits over four innings. Watts struck out five.

Hoover out-hit the Yellow Jackets 9-4.

Mason Blasche smacked a solo home run in the second inning for Hoover. Blasche, Caid Finn (3-for-4) and Andrew Pitts had multiple hits in the loss. Samuel Schmidt took the loss, throwing three innings, allowing five runs on three hits. Schmidt had seven strikeouts and walked one batter.

SOCCER

Trinity 7, Andalusia 0: The Wildcats opened section play with the win at Andalusia on Friday. Jackson Champion scored four goals in the rout.

Kirby Lumpkin, Tillman Clements and Cal Bennett also scored for Trinity (3-4-1). Carter Younger got the shutout in goal. Clements, Lawson Roth and Will Owen had assists.

SOCCER

Hoover 2, LaGrange (Ga.) 0: The Bucs finished the Lakeshore Shootout with a 3-0 record after topping LaGrange. Hoover’s defense, led by center backs Sage Thomas and Allie Sanderson and goalkeeper Lane Morton did not allow a goal in the event.

Bailee Dowdey scored a first-half goal vs. LaGrange and Julie Cooke added another in the second half.

In Game 2, Hoover beat Daphne 1-0 on a second-half goal by Cooke off an assist by Elise Marquardt.

In the opener for the Bucs, Hoover beat White County of Cleveland, Ga., 3-0 on first-half goals by Cooke, Marquardt and Brooklyn Gernenz.

Foley 4, Dothan 2: The Lions improved to 5-0-1 with the win at Dothan.

Claire Ressinger scored two goals in the win. Yury Santaclara and Emma Korhonen also scored for Foley.

Layla Ainsworth picked up the win in goal.

SOFTBALL

Mary G. Montgomery 13, Theodore 2: Ava Gradick collected three hits and drove in three runs to lead Mary G. Montgomery to the win in the championship game of the MGM Invitational on Saturday. Gradick’s big hit came with a 0-1 count in the bottom of the third when she drove a line drive to the wall in right center, scoring Erin Barker and Breleigh Corley giving MGM a 10-2 lead.

Gradick also had four of the Vikings’ 10 stolen bases in the game.

Mikayla Baumgartner pitched four innings, allowing just four hits and one earned run. Baumgartner opened the scoring for MGM with a three-run home run to center field. Jayden Sawyer drove in three runs on two hits for MGM. Olivia Tilman had a triple and drove in one run for Theodore.

The Vikings finished the tournament with a record 5-1, winning five in a row after dropping the first game. The Vikings scored 60 runs, with a team average of .524 and 10 total home runs. Baumgartner and Jayden Sawyer combined to pitch 27 innings with 38 strikeouts.

“Our standard here is to get better every game, we accomplished that this weekend,” said Vikings coach Barclay Davis. “We were seeing the ball well offensively, which is a great sign, we have increased our speed on the basepaths, that makes us a dangerous team lineup wise one through nine.

“After the loss to Theodore, we knew we could play better and it started with the victory over Daphne, that was special for us, it was the first victory over the Trojans in four years,” Davis said.

In a 6-4 win over Foley, Baumgartner blasted a three-run homer in the second inning and collected two hits to lead MGM. Baumgartner knocked a 1-0 pitch over left field, driving in Erin Barker and Breleigh Corley giving MGM a 5-3 lead.

Jayden Sawyer struck out 10 batters for the Vikings and added a solo home run in the third. MGM collected 11 hits, including a pair by Laina Holliman.

Analeese Moore scored three runs and stole three bases for the Lions in defeat.

In a 12-2 win over Elberta, Gradick went 4-for-4, collecting four singles and scoring three runs. Baumgartner collected two hits and drove in two runs while pitching striking out six in four innings. Holliman had three doubles and a pair of RBIs for the winners.

Mary G. Montgomery pounded Foley 15-2 in the tournament scoring five runs in the first and seven in the fourth. Baumgartner had three of the Vikings’ 11 hits, with a two-run homer.

Emilee Perry had five stolen bases as the Vikings finished with 12 base thefts in the game. Gracie Coleman stole home and had a pair of RBIs. Lacy Riley also had a home run.

Sawyer also homered, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs. She also pitched three innings, allowing a pair of solo home runs.

Wetumpka 13, Satsuma 0: Wetumpka won the championship of the Prattville Lions Classic on Saturday, dropping Satsuma to 6-2 on the season.

Satsuma lost 3-1 to Brewbaker Tech, beat Valley 15-0 and Stanhope Elmore 11-2 in pool play in the Classic. In bracket play, the Gators beat Opp 2-0, Mobile Christian 2-1 and Elmore County 8-3 to earn a spot in the championship.

Anna Jo Bonds went 3-0 in the circle for Satsuma. Belle Sheffield was 3-1 and Haley Jones was saddled with the loss in the title game.

Bonds had 12 hits on the week, including eight doubles and a home run.

Hoover 8, Chelsea 1: The Bucs won their season opener in the Red and Blue Classic at Vestavia Hills on Friday. Emily Sims picked up the win, allowing four hits and one run in three innings. Sims struck out five and walked one.

Julie Amacher took the loss for Chelsea, allowing one run off four hits in three innings.

Bella Foran and Olivia Christian had two hits each for the Bucs.

Kathryn Bryars went 2-for-3 at the plate for Chelsea.

In another Red and Blue Classic contest, the Bucs beat Athens 10-6. Kaitlyn Raines earned the win in the circle. Lindsey Westhoven had a two-RBI single in the win.

On Saturday, Hoover rallied for three runs in the sixth inning to top Pell City 7-5. Hoover’s MC Detwiler’s sacrifice bunt in the top of the sixth broke a 4-all tie.

Haley Westhoven picked up the win in relief for Hoover, allowing one run on one hit over three innings. She struck out three and walked one. Starter Olivia Christian gave up four runs on seven hits in three innings.

Kaitlyn Raines and Christian had home runs for Hoover. Bella Foran had a two-run single.

Paige McMurrey hit a three-run home run in the second for Pell City.

Addy Simmons took the loss for Pell City. She struck out seven and allowed seven runs on seven hits in six innings.

Hartselle beat Hoover 4-0, also on Saturday. Hoover managed just two hits, both by Foran.

Theodore 5, Mary G. Montgomery 3: The Bobcats scored all their runs in the third inning to beat the host team in the MGM Invitational on Friday.

Lauren Dickinson doubled in a pair of runs for Theodore and Chloe Coble had two of the winners’ eight hits.

Jayden Sawyer took the loss for Mary Montgomery, allowing five runs in four innings pitched. She struck out four.

Laina Holliman led the Vikings with a double and a solo home run.

Mary G. Montgomery 11, Daphne 2: The Vikings bounced back with the win over Daphne on Friday. Mary Montgomery had three home runs and scored seven runs in the third inning.

Ava Graddick smacked an inside-the-park home run and had two stolen bases. Lacy Riley and Jayden Sawyer also homered in the win.

Mikayla Baumgartner gave up two runs and struck out nine for the Vikings. She also had a pair of hits in the win.

Hannah Newport had a two-run homer for the Trojans.

TENNIS

Montgomery Academy 9, Prattville 0: The Eagles lost just one game in the match on Wednesday in Montgomery at O’Connor Tennis Center.

Gabby Barrera topped Addie Taylor at No. 1 singles. Jenna Chandler beat Colbie Horne at No. 2; MaeMae Voltz topped Kate Bibb at No. 3; Kareen Singh won No. 4 singles over Karstyn Davidson; Lola Campbell topped Alexandra Mangini; and Marianna Lassner beat Taylor Ann Shavers at No. 6.

Barrera-Chandler beat Taylor-Horne in No. 1 doubles. Voltz-Singh beat Bibb-Davidson 8-1 at No. 2. Campbell-Lassner beat Lily Gregory and Mangini at No. 3 doubles and Claire Moore and Lillian Cameron won the No. 4 match.

On Friday, Montgomery Academy topped St. Paul’s 5-4. Barrera won at No. 1 singles for the Eagles. Singh and Lassner also took singles wins in the match.
