Here’s Tiger Woods’ apology about handing Justin Thomas tampon at Genesis, backlash immediate

Tiger Woods caused a stir Friday – not for his play – but for what is being called a chauvinist prank he played on Justin Thomas in the Genesis Invitational.

He rocked a a 323-yard drive, which was 10 yards longer than Thomas, 29. Walking off the tee, Woods put a tampon in Thomas’ hand. Thomas reacted by throwing it on the ground.

Woods apologized for the joke.

“It was supposed to be all fun and games and obviously it hasn’t turned out that way.” Tiger told reporters. “If I offended anybody, it was not the case, it was just friends having fun. As I said, if I offended anybody in any way, shape or form, I’m sorry. It was not intended to be that way. It was just we play pranks on one another all the time and virally I think this did not come across that way, but between us it was – it’s different.”

Social media, of course, took notice immediately.

Woods apologized after his bogey-bogey finish for a 74 in the second round, which left him over the projected cut line. By the end of the day, he moved up enough spots that he was certain to be around for the weekend. He was 11 shots behind Max Homa.
