Advent priest returns to New York

A New York priest who has been serving on the staff at Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham will be leaving to lead a church in Brooklyn.

The Rev. Ben DeHart, who joined the Advent staff in January 2022 with the title of canon for parish life and chaplain for Advent Episcopal Day School, will become the rector of St. John’s Park Slope in Brooklyn.

“Joining our team in a period of transition was a blessing for our church, and I am grateful for the time that we shared together in ministry,” said Advent Cathedral Dean Craig Smalley on the church’s web site Friday. “This move is a natural next step for Ben. After numerous years in ordained ministry, he will have the opportunity to shepherd a congregation. Ben is a gifted preacher and teacher, a faithful pastor and friend; Ben and Chelsy will be a blessing to the congregation of St. John’s.”

DeHart’s final Sunday at Advent will be March 19.

Before arriving at the Advent, DeHart had been vicar of the Parish of Calvary-St. George’s in New York City since 2014.

DeHart is a native of New Jersey and previously served as Episcopal chaplain at Carnegie Mellon University and associate priest at St. Thomas Memorial Episcopal Church in Oakmont, Pennsylvania.
