Heavy flooding has caused I-65 in Cullman to be closed in both directions Thursday night, according to the Alabama Department of Transportation.

The interstate was shuttered around 8:48 p.m. by the Highway 278 exit in Cullman amid heavy flooding on the roadway.

“Roadway flooding reported in the area. Please use caution when traveling through this area,” ALDOT said on its website monitoring road closures and traffic.

Most of Alabama has been impacted by severe weather on Thursday, including heavy rain and flooding.

The severe weather threat of Alabama initially included the possibility of tornadoes, although the risk was later downgraded.

Tornado warnings that expired for north Alabama at 8 p.m. were not extended.
