Alabama freshman lineman from Anniston to be known by different name

One of Alabama’s incoming freshman will be known by a different name than what was reported during his recruitment.

Offensive lineman Ryqueze McElderry, from Anniston, was announced as Rock McElderry when he signed with Alabama in December but is listed as Roq Montgomery on the school’s 2023 spring roster and on his Instagram profile.

He is taking the last name of his mother, Markesha Montgomery.

“He comes from a great family,” former Anniston and current Mae Jemison coach Rico White told AL.com last year. “His mother did an excellent job raising him. She holds him to a higher standard and, believe me, he lives by it. You tell him to go get this done and he does it. He knows what it means to be a professional player.”

Montgomery is listed by Alabama at 6-foot-3 and 350 pounds. He was a four-star prospect in 247 Sports’ industry composite ranked No. 392 in the country, and No. 25 among interior offensive linemen nationally.

Alabama had two other name changes on its 2023 spring roster. Sophomore running back Jamarion Miller is now listed as Jam Miller, and incoming five-star freshman cornerback Desmond Ricks is listed as Dezz Ricks.
