Observations from Saturday’s Auburn football practice
As preseason camp kicks into gear for Auburn football, the Tigers returned the field Saturday for an open practice inside Jordan Hare Stadium.
Media was able to watch the full session, as the team went through drills, one-one-ones, seven-on-sevens and full 11-on-11 periods.
It’s still the first week of camp, so lineups and pairings should be taken with a grain of salt, but Saturday was a chance to get a better look at the team around four weeks before the season opener.
Here’s what we saw:
Availability report
- Bobby Jamison-Travis was back after his absence from Auburn’s first practice on Wednesday, but wasn’t a full participant
- Freshman corner Donovan Starr was present, but not dressed out or participating
- Rayshawn Pleasant, the transfer corner from Tulane, was not present
- Running backs Jeremiah Cobb and Justin Jones were still wearing gold non-contact jerseys
- Durell Robinson seemed to be back at full speed after Hugh Freeze said he’d be limited to start camp
- Damari Alston seemed to be limited, allowing Robinson, Omar Mabson and Alvin Henderson to get more reps
General observations
- From left to right, the first team offensive line consistently included Xavier Chaplin, Dillon Wade, Connor Lew, Jeremiah Wright and Mason Murphy
- Cam Coleman and Eric Singleton Jr. stood out as the two top receivers. Horatio Fields and Malcolm Simmons also got more reps with the first team
- Ashton Daniels was the primary second team quarterback and had a few impressive deep balls during the seven-on-seven periods
- The timing didn’t seem to quite be there yet with the first team offense, something that’s not uncommon early in fall camp
- At one point during an 11-on-11 period, Auburn used a four-receiver set with Coleman, Fields, Singleton and Simmons
- There was plenty rotation on the defensive line, with Auburn even using a heavy pass rush set at one point that included Keldric Faulk, Keyron Crawford, Chris Murray and Amaris Williams all on the field at the same time
- With Pleasant absent, Woodby took most of the second team reps at corner, alongside Raion Strader, who rotated between the first and second team
- Lee and Jay Crawford still seem to be the primary first team corners, but Strader had some solid first team reps too
- Freshman Bryce Deas got a good amount of first teams reps at linebacker next to Caleb Wheatland
- Robinson might have been the biggest standout of the day offensively, looking to be back at full speed after Freeze said he’d be limited to start practice
- Singleton, Simmons and Bryce Cain were the three taking reps at punt returner
- During one-on-one reps, Blocton, Amaris Williams and Darrion Smith both flashed on the defensive line
- Lee had a really good rep in one-on-ones against Fields, breaking up a fade route in the endzone despite being at a height disadvantage
- Arnold’s best moment of practice was a nice ball on a wheel route to Preston Howard for a touchdown in a seven-on-seven period
- While the timing was off on a handful of reps in the 11-on-11 periods, Arnold made an impressive throw on the run across his body to Simmons toward the end of practice
- Strader took advantage of the first-team reps he received, tallying a couple nice pass breakups against Coleman down the field
