Alabama schools dismiss early, switch to virtual learning Thursday, Feb. 16 ahead of severe weather

A round of severe storms will be possible for all of Alabama on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Tornadoes, wind gusts up to 70 mph, hail and heavy rain will all be possible on Thursday, starting as soon as late morning in west Alabama and pushing eastward through the nighttime hours.

There will also be a risk of a few strong storms late tonight for the northwest corner of the state.

Severe weather events are on record pace this year. The weather service said preliminary data show 28 confirmed tornadoes in January, making it the most tornadoes in January on record (which goes back to 1950).

Fourteen tornadoes hit Alabama on Jan. 12. Nine were in central Alabama, one was in north Alabama, one was in southeast Alabama and three were in southwest Alabama.
