82 layoffs coming in another Alabama plant closure

An auto parts manufacturer says it is closing its facility in north Alabama.

Federal-Mogul Motorparts is laying off 82 employees, according to a recent notice filed with the state.

The Michigan-based company is closing its facility in Boaz, on Sept. 25, per the notice. The facility is located at 300 Wagner Dr. in Boaz.

A spokesperson for Federal-Mogul did not respond to a request for comment. A spokesperson for the Alabama Department of Commerce declined to answer questions, instructing an AL.com reporter to file a records request for information about the closure.

Tenneco acquired Federal-Mogul in 2018, and Federal-Mogul – which was first founded in 1899 – now operates under DRiV, a single business division, per the company’s website.

The Boaz site is one of five manufacturing facilities in the U.S., in addition to sites in Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri and Illinois, and 13 other countries, according to the company’s website. The company also has a distribution and warehouse center in Jacksonville, Ala., according to its website.

Federal law requires large employers to file a public WARN notice with the state in advance of mass layoffs or plant closures. Those WARN notices are published by the Alabama Department of Commerce.

The expected job cuts bring Alabama’s tally of employees impacted by mass layoffs and closures in 2025 to nearly 3,000 – surpassing the count for last year.
