Tuscaloosa County voters reject property tax increase for local schools

Tuscaloosa County residents rejectd a proposed property tax increase during Tuesday’s special election.

The joint measures, a 3-mill increase and a 5-mill increase, would together have sent about $15 million additionally to local schools. The Tuscaloosa County school district hoped to fund new facilities, school resource officers and an expanded pre-K program.

The rejection means local residents will continue to pay a 10-mill property tax increase. That’s the state-mandated minimum used to support local schools. Most other counties in the state have higher tax rates.
