AHSAA North-South All-Star Week: No-hitter helps South sweep softball
The South All-Stars swept the North-South All-Star Classic softball competition on Wednesday as three pitchers combined for a no-hitter in a 2-0 Game 1 win. The South recorded a 4-2 decision in Game 2 of the doubleheader played at Montgomery’s Lagoon Park.
Wicksburg’s Ellie Cox, Satsuma’s Anna Jo Bonds and Saraland’s Myleigh Dobbins proved to be unhittable in the opening game – facing just 23 batters (two over the minimum) with 7 strikeouts in a contest that lasted just 91 minutes. Cox was the MVP for the South team.
AHSAA officials said it appeared to be the first no-hitter in the North-South Classic since 1997.
Cox, who helped Wicksburg earn the Class 3A state title in May, started and pitched 3 innings to pick up the win. She walked 2 and struck out 4. Bonds faced the minimum three batters in the fourth inning with a strikeout. Dobbins worked the final 3 innings, facing nine batters with 3 strikeouts, and earned a save.
The South got the only run it would need in the top of the first inning when Bonds was hit by a pitch and later scored on a single by Dobbins. Lead-off hitter Mariah Harrison of Central-Phenix City walked and scored on a single by Sydney Johnson of Saint James in the fourth inning for an insurance run.
North pitchers allowed 4 hits with 8 strikeouts. Starter Kayden Bush of Thompson allowed 3 hits over 3 innings, with 3 strikeouts and a walk. Alivia Lewis of Deshler allowed an unearned run on a hit with 2 strikeouts in 2 innings. Madison Academy’s Cataryna Schreiber tossed 2 shutout innings, allowed no hits, and struck out 3 to finish the game.
In Game 2, Cox had a hit and came back to the mound in the sixth inning to get the South out of jam and got the save after shutting the North out in the seventh inning to preserve the 4-2 win.
Central-Phenix City’s Kayla Storey started the second game in the circle and got the win, pitching 3 shutout innings on 2 hits with a strikeout. Bonds pitched another shutout inning as the North struggled for 11 straight innings without a run.
The South took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, thanks in part to Central’s Harrison, who finished with 2 hits and scored a pair of runs. Bonds drove in 3 runs with a double and a single.
Shreiber – who started in the circle striking out 6, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits over 3 innings – and Athens’ Caitland Tedford had 2 hits each for the North. Tedford also drove in a run and scored the North’s other run to earn North MVP honors.
