Big change is coming to Blue Bell ice cream
Blue Bell is joining a wave of food producers who plan to phase out the use of synthetic dyes.
Earlier this month, the Associated Press reported that federal health officials announced ice cream makers across America pledged to remove artificial dyes from their products in less than three years.
On July 21, Blue Bell announced that it was one of the makers.
“Blue Bell is proud to be a part of the (IDFA) commitment to eliminate certified artificial colors from our ice cream products by the end of 2027,” the company wrote on X. “We already offer many products that do not include certified artificial colors.”
The announcement is just the latest from food producers regarding the change.
In June, J.M. Smucker Co. announced plans to remove artificial colors from its products by the end of 2027. According to Associated Press, the company also said it will remove synthetic dyes from foods sold to K-12 schools by the 2026-2027 school year.
The Food and Drug Administration is phasing out the use of petroleum-based synthetic dyes by the end of 2026 – a change that could affect the color of several snack foods including Skittles and Flamin’ Hot Cheetoes.
