Level 2 risk for severe weather for Alabama on Thursday
A round of severe storms will be possible for all of Alabama on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
And there will also be a chance for isolated severe storms in northwest Alabama on Wednesday as well.
Here is Wednesday’s severe weather outlook:
There will be a Level 1 risk for severe weather on Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night for the areas in dark green.
Tornadoes, damaging winds, hail and heavy rain will all be possible with Thursday’s storms, while Wednesday’s storms could bring high winds and flooding.
It will also be windy before the storms even arrive, and a wind advisory will go into effect for all of north Alabama at 3 p.m. Tuesday, according to the weather service.
Forecasters are starting to get more of a handle on timing for Thursday’s storms, and the most likely time for severe weather looks to be Thursday afternoon into Thursday night.
Wednesday’s storms are also expected to develop during the afternoon and evening hours.
THURSDAY’S STORMS
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has a Level 2 out of 5 risk — or slight risk — for severe weather in place for the majority of Alabama for Thursday.
A Level 2 risk means that scattered severe storms will be possible.
The storms are expected to develop along or ahead of a cold front that will push into the state from the west.
The weather service said many — but not quite all — of the parameters will be in place for storms, but some details are still in question.
The timing is also not a sure thing, but the most likely time frame for bad weather will begin Thursday afternoon in west Alabama and spread eastward through the evening hours.
WEDNESDAY’S STORMS
On Wednesday the northwest corner of Alabama will have a Level 1 — or marginal — risk. A Level 1 risk means that isolated severe storms will be possible.
The National Weather Service said Wednesday’s storms could generate damaging winds and flooding rain, especially for northern Alabama, which could see 1 to 2 inches of rain or more.
The storms and rain are expected to move out of Alabama on Friday, and much cooler weather is expected Friday and into Saturday before temperatures begin to rise again.
No severe weather is in the forecast after Thursday.
