Trump praises ‘big Alabama’ for following Florida’s example on detaining immigrants
President Donald Trump lauded Alabama and other Republican-led states for creating their own versions of Florida’s “Alligator Alcatraz” on Tuesday.
Trump made the comments standing alongside Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem Tuesday during a tour of the facility in South Florida.
“We have Louisiana doing it, big Alabama is doing it,” Trump said. “We have a lot of states…they seem to be red states, they’re not too many blue states, for whatever reason. The red states, Republican-run states are doing it. The blue states don’t do very well at security and policing, unfortunately.”
“Alligator Alcatraz” is the name given to the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport in the Everglades.
Designed to be “completely self-contained,” the temporary facility will house undocumented migrants relocated from local jails to repurposed FEMA trailers and “soft-sided temporary facilities” usually used to house storm victims, a Department of Homeland Security official told CNN.
The installation is designed to hold about 3,000 but could hold as many as 5,000, betting that the surroundings will deter escape. Utilities, such as water, sewage and power will be provided by mobile equipment, according to the governor’s office.
It is expected to cost $450 million to operate.
Last week, two companies in south Alabama received federal contracts related to expanding detention beds across the country for the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
After returning to the White House in January, Trump signed an executive order declaring a national emergency at the southern border which has been used as a justification to expedite contracts for detention beds, according to the Associated Press.
DeSantis said “very red states” should be creating their own facilities.
“And then what happens is, you’ll have a lot of people that will deport on their own, because they don’t want to end up in an ‘Alligator Alcatraz,’” he said. “I think this is a model, but we need other states to step up.”
