The personal finance website analyzed more than 180 of the nation’s largest cities based on 29 indicators of happiness, ranging from depression rates and income growth to community engagement. You can read the full methodology here.
“The ideal city provides conditions that foster good mental and physical health, like reasonable work hours, short commutes, good weather, and caring neighbors,” said Chip Lupo, an analyst at WalletHub.
The findings showed that cities on the West Coast and in the Midwest rank higher in terms of happiness, with Fremont, California, taking the top spot. The city boasts the highest life satisfaction rate, the fifth-lowest depression rate, and the fourth-highest average life expectancy in the country.
In contrast, metro areas like Detroit and Cleveland landed near the bottom of the list, scoring low on several happiness indicators.

Where do Alabama cities rank?
Based on the analysis, Huntsville ranked 108 out of 180 cities overall, making it the happiest city in Alabama. The north Alabama city scored highest in the state for emotional and physical well-being.
Mobile placed 173 among the happiest cities in the country, while Montgomery came in at 174. Birmingham received the lowest rank at 176.
