Vanderbilt signee is once again Alabama’s Gatorade Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year

For the second straight year, St. Paul’s star Janie Ford has been named the Gatorade Alabama Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

The Vanderbilt signee broke her own state record in the heptathlon this spring, finishing with 5,311 points.

In the AHSAA Class 7A outdoor meet, she collected four individual wins with state records in the long jump, 300-meter hurdles and the 200. She also won the 100-meter hurdles.

She finished her high school career with 20 individual state titles and three heptathlon wins. Last week, she was named the AL.com Coastal Female Athlete of the Year again.

Ford is the daughter of 1994-95 Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year Camille Root Ford, who is also her coach at St. Paul’s.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program recognizes one winner in each state across 12 different sports along with one overall national winner in each sport.

Joining Ford as the Alabama winners this academic year were: Huntsville’s Eric Moore (boys cross country), Hoover’s DeWayne Brown (boys basketball), Daphne’s Victoria Moten (softball), Oak Mountain’s Cooper Jeffcoat (boys track and field), Briarwood Christian’s Taylor Leib (girls soccer), Elba’s Alvin Henderson (football), Southside-Gadsden’s Camren Thompson (boys soccer), Spring Garden’s Ace Austin (girls basketball), Bob Jones’ Kennedy Vaughn (volleyball), Homewood’s Emma Brooke Levering (girls cross country) and American Christian’s Eric Hines (baseball).

Every Player of the Year receives a grant to donate to a social impact partner.

The awards are chosen by a selection committee, which leverages expert opinions from coaches, scouts, media and others as sources to help evaluate and determine the winners.
