Hurricane watchers keeping eyes on the Gulf

The Gulf was getting more active on Sunday, nearly a month into the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season.

The National Hurricane Center continued to track Tropical Depression Two, which could briefly become Tropical Storm Barry before moving onshore in southern Mexico later today.

And the hurricane center on Sunday added a new area of interest that could develop later this week in the northern Gulf, closer to Florida.

That potential system had a low chance (20 percent) of becoming a tropical depression in the next seven days.

TROPICAL DEPRESSION TWO

Tropical Depression Two strengthened a bit overnight and has a small window to become the second named storm of 2025 in the Atlantic before moving onshore in southern Mexico later today.

Tropical storm warnings continued along part of Mexico’s Gulf Coast on Sunday.

As of 7 a.m. CDT Sunday, Tropical Depression Two was located about 65 miles north of Veracruz, Mexico, and was moving west-northwest at 9 mph.

The depression had sustained winds of 35 mph. Those winds need to increase to 40 mph before it gets a name, which would be Barry. The hurricane center said some slight strengthening will be possible before the system moves inland later today or tonight.

A tropical storm warning remained in effect for Mexico’s Gulf Coast from Boca de Catan southward to Tecolutla.

The hurricane center said the depression could bring 3 to 6 inches of rain, with isolated amounts of 10 inches, to the Mexican states of Veracruz, San Luis Potosi and Tamaulipas through Monday.

WATCHING THE GULF LATER THIS WEEK

The hurricane center said another system has the potential to form in the northern Gulf or western Atlantic later this week.

Forecasters said that an area of low pressure could form from a frontal boundary that’s expected to sag toward the U.S. Gulf Coast later this week.

There’s a chance it could start to organize as it drifts just off the U.S. coast, the hurricane center said.

The hurricane center highlighted an area to watch that included the northern Gulf and western Atlantic.

The next name on the 2025 Atlantic storm list is Chantal.

The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season began on June 1 and ends on Nov. 30.

Another busy season is expected, with an above-average number of storms.
