Michelle Obama addresses ‘rumors of the end of marriage’ to former president
Michelle Obama has heard the chatter, and she’s not here for it.
The former first lady says the public needs to calm down – things are fine between her and her husband, former President Barack Obama.
“The fact that people don’t see me going out on a date with my husband sparks rumors of the end of our marriage,” she said in an interview with NPR’s “Wild Card” released Thursday.
Speaking to Rachel Martin, Michelle Obama said, “You just are not going to know what we’re doing every minute of the day, you know?”
But that’s OK, not “the apocalypse,” she insists.
“So we don’t Instagram every minute of our lives — we are 60, y’all.”
The Obamas married 32 years ago and have two children – Malia, 26, and Sasha, 24.
But what about her absence from the funerals of former President Jimmy Carter or President Donald Trump’s inaugural, both of which occurred in January?
Obama says that was a “major” decision she made to not attend “all the things that I’m supposed to attend.”
“That was a part of me using my ambition to say, ‘Let me define what I want to do, apart from what I’m supposed to do, what the world expects of me.’ And I have to own that,” she said. “Those are my choices. Whatever the backlash was, I had to sit in it and own it. But I didn’t regret it, you know?”
But she understands that the public and the press are paying attention.
“Even in this phase in our lives, when Barack and I say something, right or wrong, it does get covered,” she said.
Obama said she is now content for life to slow down, remembering something her own mother said toward the end of her life. Marian Robinson died May 31, 2024 at the age of 86.
“She leaned over to me and she said, ‘Wow, this went fast.’ And I held her hand, I said, ‘What are you talking about?’ And she said, ‘Life.’ She said, ‘This went fast,’” she remembered.
