Hueytown man shot to death at abandoned Bessemer house
An investigation is underway after a man was shot to death overnight in Bessemer.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Willie James Johnson III. He was 24 and lived in Hueytown.
The shooting happened at an abandoned house in the 1800 block of Clarendon Avenue. Police said people often gather at that location.
Johnson was hanging out with other people when someone fired shots, said Det. Justin Burmeister.
Authorities don’t yet know if the shooter was in a vehicle or on foot, or if Johnson was the intended target.
Johnson was struck. He was taken to UAB Medical West Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:55 p.m.
Johnson is Bessemer’s third homicide this year.
