More severe weather possible today after storms hit Alabama overnight
Isolated severe storms will be possible across the entire state of Alabama again on Thursday after a stormy night.
The National Weather Service said today’s storms could again bring damaging winds, hail and heavy rain.
The most likely time for storms today will be during the afternoon and into the evening hours.
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a Level 1 out of 5 (marginal) risk for severe weather for the whole state today.
A Level 1 risk means that isolated severe storms will be possible.
Storms were moving out of Alabama on Thursday morning after a stormy day and overnight on Wednesday. Parts of south and north Alabama had severe storms during the day on Wednesday. And another cluster of storms tracked through the state overnight, prompting a severe thunderstorm watch for part of the state (which has since expired).
Those storms knocked down several trees, at least one of which fell on a house Wednesday afternoon in Section in north Alabama’s Jackson County, and the weather service got a report of lightning striking an apartment building overnight in the Inverness area in Shelby County, starting a fire.
Here is a preliminary look at storm reports from Wednesday:
The National Weather Service got several reports of wind damage from storms that moved through north and south Alabama on Wednesday. Those are indicated in blue in the map above.SPC
The weather service thinks today’s storms will be more likely this afternoon thanks to more expected hot and humid conditions.
In fact, parts of north and central Alabama will remain under heat advisories today, and the heat index in some areas is expected to climb above 100.
More storms are in the forecast for Friday, but only the eastern half of Alabama is expected to get isolated severe storms.

Friday’s storms could again contain high winds and hail and will be more likely during the afternoon and evening hours.
More rain and storms will be possible on Saturday in Alabama, but so far the Storm Prediction Center is not forecasting a risk for severe storms.
