Two chances for severe storms in Alabama this week
The National Weather Service continued to monitor the potential for severe weather on Thursday for all of Alabama.
Forecasters have also added a risk for storms on Wednesday for the northwestern part of the state.
Wednesday’s storms could bring hail and damaging winds.
Thursday’s storms will bring the potential for tornadoes, straight-line winds, hail and flooding rain.
The timing for Thursday’s storms is still fairly uncertain but will be nailed down in the next few days.
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has the entire state of Alabama in a risk area for severe weather for Thursday, which is unchanged from the past few days.
Forecasters have now added a Level 1 out of 5 risk for Wednesday. A Level 1 risk means that isolated severe storms will be possible.
Here is the severe weather outlook for Wednesday:
The National Weather Service said the most likely time for storms on Wednesday will be from around 1 p.m. through the nighttime hours.
Forecasters said Wednesday’s storms could be hail producers. Wind gusts up to 60 mph will also be possible.
On Thursday storms look to move into Alabama from the west ahead of a cold front.
Uncertainties remain about the threat level for Thursday, but strong storms look to be possible statewide.
The weather service cautioned Alabamians to keep an eye on the forecast this week for refinements to timing.
A brief shot of colder air is expected to follow Thursday’s storms, and a brief rain-snow mix could again be possible for northern Alabama as the system departs.
