Popular discount airline cancels all flights to major airport, offers customer refunds

A popular discount air carrier has canceled all flights to a major U.S. airport and is offering to reroute or refund customers.

JetBlue is eliminating flights to Miami International Airport effective Sept. 3. As a result, customers can choose to divert to a different airport or get a full refund of the amount they paid for the flight.

“To free aircraft for new routes, we’ve recently made the decision to end a small number of unprofitable flights, including between Boston and Miami,” a spokesperson said in a statement.

CBS News reports the change comes as JetBlue looks to cut costs by eliminating less profitable routes. The airline operates only a single route into Miami International, the reports indicated, with one or two daily flights between the city and Boston’s Logan International Airport.

JetBlue serves more than three dozen cities in the U.S., including Palm Beach International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida. The Miami Herald reported customers who were booked with Jet Blue are being offered Fort Lauderdale as an alternative.

According to the Herald, JetBlue served about 6.8 million passengers through Fort Lauderdale, making it the second-largest carrier at the airport Through April, JetBlue has served 2.2 million passengers through Fort Lauderdale.
