ICE detains husband of Alabama woman who will soon give birth: ‘I just want him home’

Morgan Karimi and Ribvar Karimi’s love story began while they were playing a game of ‘Call of Duty: Mobile’ in 2019.

Ribvar, from Iran, and Morgan, from Blount County, quickly fell for each other and began talking and Facetiming daily.

The two finally met in person in May 2020 and once their eyes met Morgan said “we had no doubt that we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together.”

The two got married in February and Morgan is now 31-weeks pregnant.

Now, rather than preparing to embark on parenthood together, their lives have been upended by a national immigration crackdown supposedly targeting violent criminals and gang members.

Morgan posted on Facebook Monday that Ribvar was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement Sunday morning.

The pregnant UAB worker said she has been in Montgomery trying to get him released but is in disbelief because she says they went through the immigration process the right way.

“He came to the U.S. LEGALLY on a K1 fiancé visa. We followed all the rules—got married within the 90-day window just like we were supposed to. We’ve done everything by the book,” Morgan posted.

Gardner told CBS 42 that ICE agents said Ribvar “was being detained because they did not file for an adjustment of status.”

“They even said they see he has no criminal background. I am currently 31 weeks pregnant,” she posted on social media.

She declined a request for an interview, telling AL.com that she was too stressed by the ordeal.

“Now we’re forced to hire an immigration attorney to fight for his freedom and keep our family together. It’s incredibly expensive, and while it’s deeply embarrassing to ask for help, we have no choice but to turn to our community.”

According to the ICE detainee locator, Ribvar is in custody at the Etowah County Detention Center but he will not be there much longer.

Morgan told commenters that Ribvar was likely to be transported to Louisiana on Tuesday and will likely have to wait two weeks before seeing an immigration judge.

Ribvar’s detainment is the latest case involving ICE taking an individual from Iran.

Morgan said his detainment is in part due to the current international tension between the U.S. and Iran.

In March, ICE agents detained University of Alabama student Alireza Doroudi, and the Department of Homeland Security claimed that he was a concern to national security.

However, no evidence was ever provided to support this claim and, after spending over two months in an immigration detention in Louisiana, Doroudi chose to self-deport back to Iran.

Morgan stated that she has already obtained an immigration lawyer and just wants to be reunited with her husband.

“People have no idea who I am, who he is, or our story. I just want him home with me. Our baby will be here in seven weeks.”
