Alabama football flips Big Ten running back recruit away from Illinois

Alabama football has flipped another player committed to a school in the Midwest.

Running back Javari Barnett has flipped from Illinois to the Crimson Tide, he told On3 on Monday. The 2026 running back recruit also has offers from Auburn, Baylor and more. Alabama also flipped quarterback Jett Thomalla, who had been committed to Iowa State.

Barnett visited Alabama this past weekend, the final weekend of official visits. The 5-11½, 205-pound prospect plays for Tampa Bay Tech in Florida. The 247Sports Composite lists him as a three-star recruit and the No. 30 running back in the class as well as the No. 478 recruit overall.

Other players Alabama has added in the 2026 class so far include defensive lineman JJ Finch, Thomalla, cornerback Jorden Edmonds, athlete Zyan Gibson, offensive lineman Sam Utu, edge defender Jamarion Matthews, offensive lineman Chris Booker and edge defender Kamhariyan Johnson.
