Former Alabama prep star sparks Kansas City comeback

Former Blount High School quarterback Kadarius Toney caught a 5-yard touchdown pass with 12:04 left to play as the Kansas City Chiefs took a 28-27 lead against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII on Sunday.

And he followed it with the longest punt return in Super Bowl history.

Toney’s TD on a pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes made Kansas City two-for-two in the second half as the Chiefs’ two touchdowns on two possessions overcame the Eagles’ 24-14 halftime advantage.

After Philadelphia went three-and-out, Toney fielded Arryn Siposs’ 38-yard punt at the Kansas City 30-yard line and returned it 65 yards to the Eagles 5-yard line. The Chiefs added another touchdown from there to take a 35-27 lead with 9:22 to play.

Toney surpassed a 61-yard punt return by the Denver Broncos’ Jordan Norwood for the longest in Super Bowl history. Norwood’s return came in the Broncos’ 24-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50 on Feb. 7, 2016.

Toney was an All-State quarterback at Blount High School in Prichard, and he won the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Class 6A Back of the Year Award for the 2016 season, a year after he led the Leopards to a school-record 511 points. In his final two seasons at Blount, Toney threw for 6,498 yards and 69 touchdowns and ran for 1,790 yards and 31 touchdowns.

Toney made the conversion to wide receiver at Florida, where he caught 70 passes for 984 yards and 10 touchdowns, ran for 161 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries and returned 11 punts for an average of 12.6 yards and one TD as a senior.

Toney started the 2022 campaign with the New York Giants. He had played 35 offensive snaps with two receptions for zero yards and two rushing attempts for 23 yards in two games and hadn’t practiced since Oct. 5 because of a hamstring injury when the Giants traded him to the Chiefs for third- and sixth-round selections in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Toney returned to the field on Nov. 6 in Kansas City’s 20-17 victory over the Tennessee Titans. In seven regular-season and two playoff games for the Chiefs, Toney had 20 receptions for 216 yards and two touchdowns, six rushing attempts for 73 yards and one touchdown and 14 punt returns for a 6.9-yard average.

Toney’s touchdown catch was his first in the Super Bowl.
