Beloved grocery chain opening new store after announcing 30 locations
BJ’s Wholesale Club announced this week that it will be opening another location in its home state.
The new location in Springfield, Massachusetts is expected to open later this year and create between 100-150 jobs, according to a BJ’s announcement.
“For more than 40 years BJ’s has been delivering unbeatable value to families – and that all started right here in Massachusetts,” said Bob Eddy, chairman and CEO of BJ’s. “As we’ve become one of the largest companies based in Massachusetts, we’re excited to continue growing in our own backyard – contributing to our communities and helping take care of the families who depend on us.”
The announcement came as the company has already announced plans for 30 or so new clubs over the next couple of years, including several locations in Texas.
“For more than 40 years BJ’s has been delivering unbeatable value to families – and that all started right here in Massachusetts,” said Bob Eddy, BJ’s Wholesale Club chairman/CEO. “As we’ve become one of the largest companies based in Massachusetts, we’re excited to continue growing in our own backyard – contributing to our communities and helping take care of the families who depend on us.”
When it opened in November 2023, the lone BJ’s Wholesale Club here in Alabama immediately drew throngs of shoppers in Madison, in the north part of the state near Huntsville. It was the company’s 239th location.
In 2025, there are now 255 membership-only shopping centers (plus 190 locations of its gas stations, called BJ’s Gas) across 21 states, according to the company’s website.
Launched in 1984, BJ’s has emerged as a rival to warehouse shopping juggernaut Costco. A 2024 Business Insider piece by writer Terri Peters lauded BJ’s as “perfect for shopping for my family of four.” Peters noted “a major difference between the two warehouses is that BJ’s accepts manufacturer’s coupons, and Costco does not.”
Peters added, “BJ’s also has its own coupon books and coupons available to in its app. Overall, there’s an opportunity to save a bit more at BJ’s if you’re disciplined enough to clip them.” She also preferred BJ’s for its navigability, deli counter and smaller packages of fresh produce.
That said, Peters found Costco’s clothing, upscale/unique brands and premade meals selections superior to that at BJ’s. Peters gave props to both BJ’s and Costco for their rotisserie chickens.
A May 2025 post by Amy Bell on Tasting Table, a website with millions of social media followers and “dedicated to serving the modern food and drink enthusiast,” compared Costco and BJ’s clubs.
According to Bell, BJ’s had lower membership prices. Bell said that while Costco doesn’t offer discounted memberships, BJ’s does for groups including military members/veterans, medical professionals. government employees, teachers and college students. And BJ’s offers curbside pickup, while Costco doesn’t, while noting Costco does offer pickup service although not for groceries.
Bell gave the edge in areas like delivery prices, automotive services and membership rewards to Costco though. Also noted in the Table Talk post, Costco has a pharmacy while BJ’s does not and more locations.
Bell wrote, “When you count up how many categories each club membership excels in, it turns out that BJ’s has the best membership value. Granted, you’ll want to look at each service category separately to see if it applies to you when you make your choice of which club to choose to belong to if you have both near you.”
