Movie star promises Derrick Henry a film role if he reaches NFL milestone

It started with a “Happy Gilmore 2” hoodie worn by host Dan Patrick on his show. It could end with Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry appearing in an Adam Sandler movie.

During his appearance on “The Dan Patrick Show” on Tuesday, the former Alabama All-American said reaching 2,000 rushing yards in the 2024 season hadn’t been a priority for him. But by the end of the interview, Henry had a new incentive to reach the rare NFL milestone.

As the interview was ending, Henry noted Patrick’s lime-green hoodie had “brightened up my day.”

When Patrick shared it was a promotional item for “Happy Gilmore 2,” Henry said the movie’s star, Adam Sandler, was his favorite actor.

“If you ever see him again, tell him I’m a really big fan,” Henry said. “I’d really love to meet him one day.”

Patrick said he would do better than that: “If you get to 2,000 yards, I’ll get you in a Sandler movie.”

“All right, cool,” Henry said. “Say no more. Remember that now.”

When Patrick said he had the easy end of the agreement, Henry responded: “Say no more. No pressure. The bet is on. No pressure at all.”

Contacted by Patrick, Sandler backed up the agreement in a video that Henry watched at the Ravens’ practice on Thursday.

“Two thousand yards-plus this year gets you not only in the movie,” Sandler told Henry, “but we have a nice dinner together and talk about Dan Patrick’s facial hair and how hard it is for him to grow it.”

Henry ran for 1,921 yards in the 2024 season – the 11th-most in one season in NFL history. He came up 79 rushing yards short of the league’s 10th 2,000-yard season, and he would have been the first player to achieve the feat twice. Henry ran for 2,027 yards for the Tennessee Titans in the 2020 season.

“It wasn’t important at all,” Henry said about reaching the milestone. “But you know, when you get that close, everybody’s like, ‘Hey, you couldn’t get 2,000? 1,900? Why you couldn’t get 2,000?’ I don’t know. It wasn’t in my cards.”

A former Alabama All-American is in “Happy Gilmore 2.” Former Crimson Tide golfer Justin Thomas is among the PGA Tour professionals who have cameo appearances in the movie.
