Trump threatens killing ‘crazy’ Elon Musk’s cash cow as feud escalates: ‘He was wearing thin’
President Donald Trump threatened to put a huge dent in Elon Musk’s wealth as their relationship deteriorated Thursday.
In a pair of tweets on his Truth Social media platform, Trump claimed he had actually fired Musk while suggesting ending the lucrative government contracts with companies controlled by the Tesla CEO and world’s richest person.
“Elon was ‘wearing thin,’ I asked him to leave,” Trump posted.
The president claimed his biggest donor began turning on him because the “One Big Beautiful Bill” cuts electric vehicle subsidies that bolster Tesla’s bottom line.
“I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!” Trump posted.
Musk denied that the subsidies angered him. On Thursday, he claimed that Trump only won the 2024 election because of the nearly $300 million he provided to the president’s campaign.
“Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate,” Musk responded. “Such ingratitude.”
Trump fired back, suggesting cutting the billions Musk’s companies receive from the government would be “the easiest way to save money in our budget.”
“The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts. I was always surprised that Biden didn’t do it!” the president posted.
While addressing reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, the president described his relationship with Musk in the past tense.
“Look, Elon and I had a great relationship,” Trump said. “I don’t know if we will anymore.”
