Elon Musk uses Trump’s ‘wise words’ against him to slam his ‘Big Beautiful Bill’
Elon Musk on Thursday used President Donald Trump’s words against him, resurrecting old Trump tweets to suggest the president is betraying his principles.
Musk, who vehemently opposes Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” because the legislation increases the deficit, posted a 12-year-old tweet in which Trump criticized Republicans for raising the debt ceiling.
“I am a Republican & I am embarrassed,” Trump tweeted on Jan. 13, 2023.
“Wise words,” Musk, who ended his tenure as a special government employee last week overseeing the Department of Government Efficiency, said in a retweet Thursday.
The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated Wednesday the bill would increase yearly budget deficits by a total of $2.4 trillion over 10 years, CBS News reported.
That increase pales in comparison to the $9 billion in DOGE cuts that would be codified as part of the legislation.
Musk also dipped into Trump’s social media history to resurrect a July 31, 2012 tweet in which Trump said members of Congress should be ineligible for re-election if the budget is not balanced.
“I could not agree more,” Musk tweeted Thursday.
The Tesla CEO and world’s richest person has also pushed the idea of a constitutional amendment barring members of Congress from being eligible for re-election if the deficit is greater than 3% of the country’s gross domestic product.
Musk’s Thursday tweets come a day after he stepped up his attack on the bill.
He called on Americans to pressure their congressmen to vote against the bill, which passed the House last month by a one-vote majority.
Earlier in the week, Musk called the legislation an “abomination.”
“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination,” Musk tweeted.
