Alabama football star weighs in on QB competition
Alabama receiver Ryan Williams has a significant interest in the Crimson Tide quarterback competition working out well. He’s going to be catching passes from the winner.
Williams was asked during an appearance on ESPN’s College GameDay podcast for his thoughts on the quarterbacks the Crimson Tide has going into the 2025 season.
“The tape speaks for itself,” Williams said. “We have three very good quarterbacks. Either way that it goes, I’m comfortable and confident in any of those guys just because I’ve seen the work that they put in. They all have different tendencies. Like you said, Ty (Simpson) is the frontrunner right now. Just trying to build a relationship with not only him but the rest of them of course. Just get prepared for this season. We’re super excited.”
Simpson leads a group of three that includes redshirt sophomore Austin Mack and true freshman Keelon Russell. Simpson has been with Alabama since 2022 while Mack is heading into his second season with the program. He spent his first season of college football working under Kalen DeBoer at Washington. Then there’s Russell, the No. 2 overall prospect in the 2025 recruiting class and a five-star recruit, per 247Sports.
All three are competing to replace Jalen Milroe, but Simpson is at the front of the line. The battle is expected to continue into fall camp.
“At the end of the day, if we’re playing a football game tomorrow, Ty Simpson would start,” offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb said after the spring. “He earned that. I know that’s the line everybody is looking for. But that is what he earned.”
