Alabama police officer arrested in Florida, charged with kidnapping minor

A police officer from Alabama was arrested in Florida Wednesday for allegedly kidnapping a minor.

According to Orange County jail records, David Cunningham was arrested and charged with with the Prichard Police Department and has been charged with kidnapping a minor and being a fugitive from justice.

Prichard Police Chief Walter Knight confirmed that Cunningham, 22, is an officer with the Prichard Police Department but is currently on administrative leave due to his arrest.

Knight said they were initially notified by Harrison County, Mississippi law enforcement officials that a warrant was issued for Cunningham, and he was in the area his official police vehicle.

Knight said this was against the department’s policies and is being investigated internally.

This is not Cunningham’s first time being investigated although it was from a different department.

The Mobile Police Department said that Cunningham was previously employed with the department but resigned in February during an administrative investigation.

“Cunningham resigned from the Mobile Police Department in February 2025 under administrative investigation,” the department said. “However, we’re unable to release anything further as this was a personnel matter.”
