Walmart makes major policy change to help some shoppers
Walmart is making a change designed to help a key segment of its shoppers maximize benefits.
The nation’s largest retailer announced a new program that will allow Medicare Advantage members to link their benefit cards to Walmart’s website to make it easier to use Walmart.com and the store’s app to access plan-specific items, including healthy foods, over-the-counter items and general merchandise.

The program – the first of its kind – allows customers on Walmart.com and the Walmart app to see plan-specific, benefit-eligible products while shopping. Users will also be able to track their benefits in real time and check out for same-day pickup or delivery.
“We saw an opportunity to streamline the health benefits shopping journey, make it easier for customers to discover eligible items and offer convenient pickup and delivery options that fit their busy schedule,” said Ralph Clare, senior vice president, health & wellness merchandising, Walmart U.S.
How will it work?
Customers will be able to add their Medicare Advantage card information to their online Walmart account at Walmart.com/wallet.
Once that’s done, customers will see a badge indicating certain items are “benefits program eligible.:
Customers can also filter search results to include benefits-eligible items.
For those shopping in Walmart stores, the benefits-eligible logo will show up when a customer scans items in the chain’s app.
Medicare Advantage, also known as Medicare Part C, are federally approved plans from private companies that typically offer benefits that original Medicare does not. Those extra benefits include over-the-counter products like cold, flu and allergy products, pain relievers, vitamins and supplements, first aid supplies and more.
About two-thirds of Medicare Advantage members never use those extra benefits, Walmart said.
