SEC baseball coach, AD apologize for ‘unacceptable actions’ at NCAA Regional
Florida baseball coach Kevin O’Sullivan and athletics director Scott Stricklin have apologized for O’Sullivan’s profane rant directed at Coastal Carolina and NCAA baseball officials at the Conway (S.C.) Regional on Sunday.
Angry that a Sunday afternoon elimination game time vs. East Carolina had been pushed back an hour due to Saturday’s East Carolina-Coastal Carolina game ending especially late, O’Sullivan was caught on camera verbally abusing members of the Coastal Carolina athletics staff and grounds crew, as well as two NCAA on-site representatives. The Gators lost the game 11-4, ending their season at 39-22.
O’Sullivan declined comment in his post-game press conference on Sunday, other than to say he “handled things the right way.” But on Monday, he issued a lengthy apology through the Florida athletics department.
“I let my emotions get the best of me and channeled that energy in a way I should not have,” O’Sullivan’s statement read in part. “I want to sincerely apologize for my actions and behavior to the entire NCAA Regional field of Coastal Carolina, East Carolina and Fairfield, the NCAA — including site representatives Rick French and Mark Scalf — as well as all of Gator Nation.
“I did not represent the University of Florida to the appropriate standard yesterday and take full responsibility for that, and promise to learn from this experience and be better moving forward. I … am sorry for allowing this instance to get in the way of an otherwise great weekend of postseason baseball.”
O’Sullivan’s boss, Stricklin, also weighed in, calling the coach’s actions “unacceptable.”
“This afternoon I met with Kevin O’Sullivan and told him that his actions (Sunday) fell well short of expectations of how Gators treat people,” Stricklin wrote. “One of our department’s core values is respect, and Coach O’Sullivan’s unacceptable actions failed to demonstrate that. On behalf of Florida Athletics, I want to personally apologize to everyone impacted — including NCAA representatives, Coastal Carolina and their staff, East Carolina and their team — as well as to Gator Nation.”
Coastal Carolina coach Kevin Schnall, whose team beat East Carolina in the regional final to advance to face Auburn in an NCAA Super Regional this weekend, took O’Sullivan to task in his own post-game press conference Sunday. He called the veteran Gators coach, who led his team to a College World Series championship in 2017, a “bully.”
“What transpired this morning on our field, another coach disrespected our associate AD, who works as hard as anybody in our entire program,” Schnall said of O’Sullivan. “He disrespected our field crew, who are the salt of the earth. These guys would do anything for our program. It’s not OK, and this needs to be brought up. Absolutely disrespectful. As a coach, it’s our job to mentor young kids. And the way he treated the two site reps, the way he treated our associate AD, the way he treated our field crew is absolutely unacceptable.
“This is a national champion coach who thinks he can come in here and try to bully people around. Disappointed. Disappointed, somebody that a lot of coaches look up to, for him to act that way. Really disappointed. He disrespected a Hall of Fame coach (Scalf, who won more than 900 games at UNC-Wilmington), who’s the site rep here.”
There is video of O’Sullivan’s rant circulating on the Internet (distributed by East Carolina’s radio team), though be warned the coach uses very coarse language.
