Birmingham Stallions roll into UFL playoffs off season’s highest point total
The Birmingham Stallions notified the rest of the United Football League on Sunday that they remain the team to beat in the spring football league. Birmingham starts the playoffs next week in pursuit of its fourth consecutive league championship, and the Stallions warmed up by trouncing the Memphis Showboats 46-9 in their regular-season finale.
Linebacker Tae Crowder returned two interceptions for touchdowns to help Birmingham reach the highest point total posted in a UFL game this season in the final regular-season contest of 2025.
The Stallions offense scored on every possession but its final one, which ended at the Memphis 10-yard line when the second-half clock ran out.
Birmingham rolled up 23 first downs, outgained the Showboats 338-201 in yardage and had 10 players make a reception, including left tackle Barry Wesley, who had a blocked pass fall into his hands.
In his third start of the season, Birmingham quarterback J’Mar Smith completed 13-of-17 passes for 127 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in the first half against the Showboats.
Smith helmed touchdown drives of 72 and 71 yards, with the second capped by a 10-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Amari Rodgers as the Stallions took a 20-9 lead with 3:26 left in the first half.
Birmingham’s fourth starting quarterback this season, Smith gave way to Andrew Peasley in the second half. Peasley had seen almost one half of action in Game 6 before joining the Stallions’ QB injury ward.
Peasley completed 9-of-14 passes for 93 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions and ran for 22 yards on two carries.
Crowder’s touchdowns came on returns of 51 and 75 yards.
On the first, Birmingham defensive end Steve Linton hit Memphis quarterback Dresser Winn as he was throwing. Stallions defensive tackle Willie Yarbary deflected the throw, which was then tipped by Showboats wide receiver Isaiah Washington and caught on the run by Crowder, who sailed into the end zone to give Birmingham a 13-3 lead with 3:10 left in the first quarter.
On his second interception, Crowder picked off Winn again and cleared his path to the end zone by faking a pitch to a trailing teammate. Crowder’s TD with 14:44 remaining put the Stallions in front 39-9.
Birmingham running back Ricky Person Jr. reached the end zone on a pair of 2-yard runs and also blocked a punt. Running back Larry Rountree III scored the Stallions’ final touchdown on a 2-yard run with 9:13 remaining.
Smith, Rountree and wide receivers Marlon Williams and Davion Davis scored one 1-point conversion apiece, and Birmingham kicker Harrison Mevis banged through field goals of 49 and 54 yards.
A week after going 11-of-13 on third down in a 26-22 victory over the Michigan Panthers, the Stallions converted nine of their 12 third-down snaps into first downs, got another two first downs on third-down penalties against Memphis and converted a fourth-down snap after one of the third-down failures. The Birmingham quarterbacks went 7-of-7 for 80 yards on third-down throws on Sunday.
With the victory, the Stallions finished the regular season at 7-3 and one game ahead of Michigan at the top of the USFL Conference standings. The Showboats closed at 2-8, with one of the victories against Birmingham 24-20 in overtime on April 25.
The Stallions and Panthers will square off in the USFL Conference Championship Game at 2 p.m. CDT Sunday at Protective Stadium in Birmingham. ABC will televise the game.
The winner of the contest will play the winner of the XFL Conference Championship Game between the St. Louis Battlehawks and DC Defenders in the United Football League Championship Game. The league title game is set for June 14 at the Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis.
